Throughout the month of August, the Church traditionally invites us to turn our hearts and minds to the Blessed Virgin Mary with special devotion. It’s a season to renew our connection to our Holy Mother, reflect on her example, and allow her guidance to draw us closer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
At the center of this month is the Solemnity of the Assumption on August 15, along with a rich tradition of honoring Mary’s Immaculate Heart.
A Mother’s Joy and Sorrow
Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary encourages us to contemplate the full reality of Mary’s earthly life, including both her great joys and her profound sorrows.
When we look at an image of her Immaculate Heart, we see a burning heart encircled by a crown of roses and pierced by a sword. This vivid imagery speaks to Mary’s willingness to unite her personal suffering with the sacrifice of her Son, Jesus. In our own lives, when we experience hardship, grief, or uncertainty, Mary offers us a compassionate example of how to remain grounded in love and faithful to God.
Walking in Her Example
August gives us a practical opportunity to reflect on Mary’s virtues and ask how we can live them out in our families, parishes, and daily routines. Her unshakeable faith, her humility as the Lord’s servant, and her quiet strength give us a clear model for everyday discipleship.
By contemplating Mary’s witness, we learn to:

Mary shows us that true holiness isn’t complicated. It’s built through daily fidelity, trust, and love.
