This month in Mission Monthly, our focus is on seminarians. These young men are a vital part of the future of our local Church here in North Louisiana. The preparation they receive now guarantees that our communities will continue to receive the sacraments, spiritual guidance, and pastoral care we need to keep the Church alive and thriving. They give us hope for the future of our Church.
The Reality of Formation
The path to the priesthood is demanding and requires complete dedication. Our seminarians go through an intense process as they discern God’s call. Their days are built around the Eucharist, daily Mass, and the Liturgy of the Hours. They build a deep, personal relationship with Christ while meeting rigorous academic requirements. They spend hours studying theology, scripture, philosophy, and Church history.
They also learn how to serve us by working directly in local parish ministries, helping with outreach programs, and participating in community service. They are learning on the ground, dedicating their days to preparation so they can one day serve our community.
How the Catholic Service Appeal Makes it Possible
This journey is not a short or easy one. Seminarians typically spend between six and nine years working through different stages of study. As you can imagine, the cost of tuition, room, and board for those years can be substantial. Because these young men must give their full attention to rigorous study and deep prayer, they cannot work secular jobs to pay their own way.
Sponsoring their education takes a massive financial burden off their shoulders. It keeps them free from the distraction of student loans and future debt while they focus on God’s call for their lives. In the Diocese of Shreveport, a large portion of our yearly Catholic Service Appeal funds goes directly to cover these educational costs. The diocese spends over $50,000 per year, per seminarian, on their educational costs.
When you give, your donations become the hands and feet of Christ, making sure our diocese continues to have holy, well-formed priests. Without your help, we simply could not afford to fund this essential education. If you ever wonder if your gift matters, just look at the priests who serve your parish every day. Their formation was funded by the generosity of people just like you through the Catholic Service Appeal. Every single dollar makes a difference.
Invitation to Participate
