A Lifelong Walk: Growing in Faith Together
When we think about “Faith Formation,” many of us immediately picture a classroom full of second graders preparing for First Holy Communion. While those moments are a huge part of what we do, the mission of faith formation in the Diocese of Shreveport is in reality much wider. It’s the heartbeat of our community, from our littlest disciples to our oldest parishioners.
As Catholics, we believe in lifelong conversion. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states in paragraph 1435:
“Conversion is accomplished in daily life by gestures of reconciliation, concern for the poor, the exercise and defense of justice and right, by the admission of faults to one’s brethren, fraternal correction, revision of life, examination of conscience, spiritual direction, acceptance of suffering, endurance of persecution for the sake of righteousness. Taking up one’s cross each day and following Jesus is the surest way of penance.”
This means that our hearts are always being invited to turn more fully toward God. Faith formation is the way we learn to hear that invitation. It’s how we learn to know and love our God, how we come to understand the beauty of the liturgy, and how we discover our own unique way to pray and participate in the life of the Church.
The Human Heart in Search of God

Think about the moment an adult in OCIA stands before the community during the Rite of Acceptance and the Rite of Welcome. There is a visible sense of hope in the room. They are seeking something real, and through our diocesan formation programs, they find a path.
Or consider a teenager in one of our youth groups. In a world that is often loud and confusing, their formation helps to give them a foundation. They aren’t just learning facts from a book; they’re learning how to live as a disciple of Christ in their schools and with their friends.
Why Your Support Matters
This vital work doesn’t happen on its own. It requires resources, training for our catechists, and carefully developed programs that ensure every person, no matter their age, has access to the Truth.
The Catholic Service Appeal is the engine that keeps these ministries running in our diocese. When you give to the CSA, you’re helping to provide the materials for sacrament preparation. You are supporting the training of leaders who walk alongside those entering the Church. You are making it possible for our diocese to offer guidance and support to every parish, ensuring that the light of faith is passed down from one generation to the next.
